Top mistakes massage therapists make

Top mistakes massage therapists make

Massage is an art of healing. It has to be done with utmost care to make the massage experience a rejuvenating one. Your clients are more likely to come to your massage clinic/spa again if they have had a great experience. If they have an unpleasant experience chances are you may lose them.

Let’s look at the top mistakes massage therapists make and should be avoided

Interruption between treatments

A massage should be a continuous process. Try to avoid stepping away from the customer for any reason.

Keep all your massage supplies you need during treatment within arms reach.

If your clinic or spa does not have reception staff, set up your phones with a voice message indicating that you are in treatment and you will call back as soon as you are able. Your clients calling to book an appointment will understand. They will appreciate your full attention when it is their turn in treatment.

Uncomfortable Massage Space

It is just as important to have a pleasant ambiance in your massage room as it is to know all the right techniques in massage therapy. Your clients will have a much better experience if they are in a space that is comfortable and relaxing.

Below are the things you should keep in mind

  1. Temperature – Always remember that your client will feel colder than you as he/she is relaxing. Try to keep your massage room warm or invest in a table warmer or heated blanket to ensure your clients comfort.
  2. Noise – You might be adapted to the office noises as you work but they may be disruptive to your clients during their treatment. Spend some time in your massage room. Listen to the noises in the surrounding rooms and see if there is a way to mute any disruptive noises.
  3. Smell – You would like your massage room to smell pleasant but not overwhelming. So essential oils are a way to make the ambiance more pleasant (remember they are usually highly concentrated, a drop might be enough). Also try to avoid wearing perfumes or any artificial fragrance.
  4. Communication – Communication is the key to helping your client feel comfortable. Tell your client to let you know if the pressure is light or too hard. Be sure to ask them if they are comfortable or not. When you begin the massage try asking a question or two about their comfort level. If at some point during the massage you notice their comfort level changing check with them and make the appropriate adjustments to the treatment.

Not being present with the customer
A massage therapist should aim to be present with the client during the massage. This means he/she should pay attention to the way the client’s their breathing, the feeling of their tissue and any other signs during the treatment. You want to ensure their massage experience is a reviving one. Take the time that is necessary after every stroke, try not to rush the process.

Not paying attention on yourself
While giving massage you should focus on yourself too. You should be comfortable at all the times during the treatment. Your client may be able to feel your energy if you are tensed or stressed. Take time before every treatment to try to centre yourself and balance your energy. Stretching and self massage in between treatments and at the end of the day will also benefit your body and mind.

What should be used for massage?

Massage therapy is designed to be a reviving experience. To ensure a soothing, relaxing treatment, finding a great massage lubricate is key.

There are many options to choose from and each company will claim that their product it is the best one for various reasons. It is important for you, as the massage therapist to pick a product that will work best for you as well as your client.

Currently you might be using a lubricate which you have used during your training/qualification period but you might be missing much better option.

We will take each type of lubricate and look at its advantages and disadvantages so that it will be easier for you to decide.

1.  Lotions & Creams
Massage lotions are the common lubricates used by massage therapists. Lotions are perfect when your client has a hairy body. The light consistency of the lotion won’t mat the hair and you will be able to do the massage swiftly.

Lotions and creams are kind of similar products, but they have different consistency. Massage creams tend to be thicker, while lotions are thinner and more liquid like. Lotions can give you more return for your buck as they have more spreadability. Creams are good for topical treatments on stiff areas of skin.

Advantage
Massage lotion and creams are good for deep tissue and other high friction massage types. As they provide medium glide and while they are nourishing the skin they are absorbed fairly at slow rate. These are non-sticky, easy to clean up and are non-slippery too.

Disadvantage
Some massage lotions and creams are water based those can make the skin feel dried out. Creams normally come in tubes or jars which don’t work well when transferred into a small pump or squirt bottle to use in a holster, so it can be hassle to reapply during treatment.

Lotions and creams can feel cold when they are first applied to the skin which can uncomfortable to your client.

2.Oils
There are a lot of oils which can be used for massage therapy, some examples of these are jojoba, avocado, fractional coconut, sweet almond, olive, sunflower & rice bran. To make massage more effective therapists sometimes blend oils for specific fragrance and consistency during a massage treatment.

Advantage:
The best property of oil is that it deeply nourishes and absorbs easily. It gives high glide during the treatment, can be easily transferred to small pump or squirt bottles and kept in your holster for easy reapplication during treatment.

Oil can be an economical option when a therapist works on a large surface. It also warms up easily and gives very pleasant experience to the client.

Disadvantage
When oil is applied, sometimes the client feels slightly sticky after their treatment. Be sure to apply only the amount needed for your treatment, any excess will need to be wiped away and unfortunately oil can stain clothes or linens. You’ll also want to be careful not to get any on the floor and have either yourself or you client slip and
fall.

If you are able to practice with all types of lubricate, you can always check with your client to see what their preference is which will engage them further in the relaxing massage experience you are providing them.

Therapists use heated, warm stones on the body on specific points.  This warmth helps the muscles loosen up so the massage therapist can reach the areas with muscle tension quickly.

PNF Stretches (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation)

This technique is a combination of passive stretching and isometrics in which your muscle is alternating stretched passively and contracted.  It mainly targets the nerve receptors in muscle to extend the muscle length.

Handy Uses for Essential Oils!

Essential Oils have an excess of amazing uses for everything from pampering yourself to cleaning and helping with various ailments.

What are Essential Oils? An Essential Oil is an aromatic liquid extracted from leaves, twigs, berries, bark, wood, root, flowers, citrus peels, or other plant matter. They are not actually oily, but have more of a water-like feel. Though Essential Oils are natural, they are very concentrated and should be used with caution. Except for Lavender, tea tree, German chamomile, rose, sandalwood and geranium, most Essential Oils should not be used undiluted or neat directly on the skin.

Essential Oil

Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil like sweet almond, jojoba, sesame, grapeseed etc unless you know it is safe to use undiluted. To test if you are sensitive to particular oil, combine 1 or 2 drops to a teaspoon of carrier oil in a small container. Dab a small amount to your wrist or the crook of your arm and wait for 24 hours. Use extra caution if you have a serious health condition or are pregnant. Educate yourself about the properties and contraindication of essential oil before using it. Now that we have that out of the way, on to the uses!

Cleaner: 2 teaspoons of antimicrobial tea tree oil with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle

Laundry: Mix 3-5 drops of your favorite essential oil with an unscented laundry detergent before each load.

Air Freshener: Combine 1 teaspoon of essential oil to 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray as needed. Before using on fabrics, do a spot check to make sure it doesn’t stain.

Repel Mice: For a natural repellant, add 2 teaspoons of peppermint to 1 cup of water and spray in areas where you think mice might frequent.

For Bath: Add 5-8 drops of peppermint or rosemary oil to a large, hot foot bath to relieve pain and stimulate circulation.

Massage: Use light carrier oil like vegetable, sunflower, or walnut as a base for massage oil. Add a few drops of peppermint for sore muscles, ginger for your lower back and joints, or avocado oil for a luxurious foot bath.

Hair Loss: Add a few drops of rosemary essential oil to dollop of shampoo or conditioner to increase circulation to the scalp.

Headaches: Mix a small amount of peppermint oil to carrier oil, apply to fingertips and massage temples. If peppermint is too strong, add lavender for extra calming properties.

Burns: Apply lavender essential oil to burns to relieve pain and stop the burn from progressing. Do a spot check first to make sure you don’t have sensitivity. To soothe sunburns, add a few drops of lavender oil to a cool bath.

Some suggestions for Choosing & Caring for Linens

Table linens are one of the most significant accessories a massage therapist will purchase, since those linens are so visible to clients. Caring properly for your linens is one of the most imperative steps in maintaining a hygienic practice. The experts all agreed; don’t short sheet your massage practice by choosing anything less than the best- quality linens you can afford and keep them in tip-top shape. Mentioned below are some pointers for selecting the right linens for your practice, and how to care them so they always send a positive message to your clients.

Cotton or Blended

Some massage therapists love 100 percent cotton massage sheets and some cotton/polyester blends. 100 percent cotton massage sheets are comfortable and soft feeling; they tend to release oil more readily than blends. Before you purchase remember that you get what you pay for in most instances and quality sheets will not pill as easily as cheaper ones.

Flannel

Flannel is measured in weight and with the heavier-weight flannel costing a bit more. The heavier the weight, the more plush the feel and the more washing it can endure. It is mostly associated with chilly climates; but it is actually a good massage sheet for warmer weather too.

Linen Secret

Always keep a minimum of two days worth of linens, which means if you have five massage schedules for a day, you need to have at least ten sets of massage sheets on hand. It’s also a good idea to keep plenty of hand towels nearby. It’s really good for wiping a client off, so you don’t have to use a sheet or a drape to wipe them off.

Printed versus Solids

There are lots of beautiful prints are available in the market but this is a matter of personal preference. You can choose batiks, and themed designs. Solids look clean and hygienic.

Cleanliness Rules

After each massage be sure to launder any sheet or towel that has come in contact with a client. It is very important to change the sheets and face rest covers between clients. Keep dirty linens away from clients and find a hamper for them. Select a quality, eco friendly and clean massage products that are considerate of client’s allergies.

Laundry SoapLaundry Suggestions

Wash sheets and other linens within 24 hours of use. Wash sheets in warm water and rinse in cold water, this will not only save energy but it also helps sheet to last longer. Hot water and a hot dryer will set in oil stains and make them smell. Use only unscented detergent that is free of chemical additives. You can try our Green life laundry soap that is environmentally safe, super cost effective and works excellent in high efficiency machines in cold water. This product has been in house tested in 2 large massage clinics for 3 years and performs above and  beyond expectations.

Folding Technique

The secret of folding a fitted sheet is start by pulling the sheet out of the dryer immediately, not letting it sit around unfolded for hours. You’ll need to spread the sheet out on a table or bed. Fold it in half horizontally, and then tuck the top gathered end into the pocket formed by the bottom gathered end. Fold everything horizontally in half again. Then fold the bulky gathered ends horizontally into the middle of the sheet. Fold the smooth end over the top of the bulky end, and then fold lengthwise into thirds yet again. What type of fabric you used and how it is cared for, in your clients’ eyes, may be reflection of how you also care for them. This will indicate that you, the massage therapist, are concerned about both their comfort and health.

Therapeutic massage has been linked to increased delta waves in the brain, which are connected to deeper, more restful sleep.

Relieve Mild Depression

Massage Therapy will help you release tension, stress and anxiety that is often accompanied with mild depression. Receiving physical touch can change our bio- chemistry and lower our cortisol levels, your body’s stress hormone. High cortisol levels can lead to all kinds of imbalance in our systems. Massage therapy is a natural way to regulate these hormones levels, improve state in our overall mental and physical wellbeing.

Boost Your Immunity

When you are stressed and anxious all time, it’s harder for our body to fight off and defend against the pathogens we’re exposed to every single day. Massage can allow  lymphatic system to drain and release waste like bacteria from the body more efficiently and increase our chances to fight off the germs we come in contact with.
