Massage Tips to Put Your Clients at Ease

Massage Tips to Put Your Clients at Ease

A massage should be a pleasant and relaxing experience, it’s a time to meditate and release the tension and harmful toxins of the body.

Knowing how to tackle some of the uncomfortable situations can enhance a client’s experience.

Here are some massage tips on how to make the best massage experience to put your clients at ease.

Make a Peaceful Environment

Create a calm and relaxing environment. Ensure that your treatment room is professional and comfortable. Play soothing music, have tissues available for you clients, a heated blanket or table warmer will help your clients feel cozy and warm. After every massage make sure that the massage table or massage chair is clean and change the linens. It is important to let your client enjoy a sanitized, peaceful and safe environment.

Conversation Do’s and Don’ts

During a massage therapy treatment it is good to encourage the client to relax and release all their tension. After you have established if they are comfortable, over all, with the pressure etc, let your client lead conversation. During the massage check in with your client if you are working on deeper layers of muscles to ensure that the pressure is not uncomfortable.

You can also ask clients if

  • The room is too hot or too cold;
  • They would like different background music playing;
  • They are experiencing pain; or
  • They have any questions related to the massage therapy treatment.

Personal Hygiene
Personal hygiene is essential; ensuring you are clean and neat in appearance goes along way in helping your clients feel comfortable with you. Clean professional attire, tidy hair styles, fresh breath, manicure/pedicures show that you care about your body and will indirectly assure your client that you care about theirs as well.

Boxers, Briefs or Panties?
A lot of people prefer to keep their underwear on during massage, while others prefer to be completely nude. Be delicately honest with your clients with regards to the situation as many times they may not know what the protocol is. If a client is having issues in areas like their lower back, hips, buttocks you may discuss with them the process of the massage treatment that you have for them and work together to find out what would work best for their comfort level as well as for the treatment.

Friendly attitude
Keep a friendly attitude with your client and make them comfortable, happy and relaxed during a massage therapy.

Follow the above guidelines to ensure a memorable massage therapy treatment for your clients and keep them coming back.

One more thing, use the best of massage supplies you can, like Gecko Massage Supplies to make an even better experience for your clients.

Top mistakes massage therapists make

Top mistakes massage therapists make

Massage is an art of healing. It has to be done with utmost care to make the massage experience a rejuvenating one. Your clients are more likely to come to your massage clinic/spa again if they have had a great experience. If they have an unpleasant experience chances are you may lose them.

Let’s look at the top mistakes massage therapists make and should be avoided

Interruption between treatments

A massage should be a continuous process. Try to avoid stepping away from the customer for any reason.

Keep all your massage supplies you need during treatment within arms reach.

If your clinic or spa does not have reception staff, set up your phones with a voice message indicating that you are in treatment and you will call back as soon as you are able. Your clients calling to book an appointment will understand. They will appreciate your full attention when it is their turn in treatment.

Uncomfortable Massage Space

It is just as important to have a pleasant ambiance in your massage room as it is to know all the right techniques in massage therapy. Your clients will have a much better experience if they are in a space that is comfortable and relaxing.

Below are the things you should keep in mind

  1. Temperature – Always remember that your client will feel colder than you as he/she is relaxing. Try to keep your massage room warm or invest in a table warmer or heated blanket to ensure your clients comfort.
  2. Noise – You might be adapted to the office noises as you work but they may be disruptive to your clients during their treatment. Spend some time in your massage room. Listen to the noises in the surrounding rooms and see if there is a way to mute any disruptive noises.
  3. Smell – You would like your massage room to smell pleasant but not overwhelming. So essential oils are a way to make the ambiance more pleasant (remember they are usually highly concentrated, a drop might be enough). Also try to avoid wearing perfumes or any artificial fragrance.
  4. Communication – Communication is the key to helping your client feel comfortable. Tell your client to let you know if the pressure is light or too hard. Be sure to ask them if they are comfortable or not. When you begin the massage try asking a question or two about their comfort level. If at some point during the massage you notice their comfort level changing check with them and make the appropriate adjustments to the treatment.

Not being present with the customer
A massage therapist should aim to be present with the client during the massage. This means he/she should pay attention to the way the client’s their breathing, the feeling of their tissue and any other signs during the treatment. You want to ensure their massage experience is a reviving one. Take the time that is necessary after every stroke, try not to rush the process.

Not paying attention on yourself
While giving massage you should focus on yourself too. You should be comfortable at all the times during the treatment. Your client may be able to feel your energy if you are tensed or stressed. Take time before every treatment to try to centre yourself and balance your energy. Stretching and self massage in between treatments and at the end of the day will also benefit your body and mind.

Benefits of prenatal massage prior and post pregnancy

Benefits of Prenatal Massage

Pregnancy is a stage in a woman’s life where she needs to take care of herself and her baby at the highest level possible. Prenatal massage is a wonderful way for a woman to help her body adapt to the new changes in her body that she will go through.

Prenatal massage helps to enhance the function of body muscles and joints and helps prepare the ‘mother-to-be’ for labour.

Below are some of the benefits of prenatal massage prior and post pregnancy.

Heartburn Problem

During pregnancy the digestion process in women can become slow as it allows the baby to absorb the vital nutrients this may cause problems with heartburn or constipation.

Stress can also increase the symptoms of heartburn. Massage is a good way to reduce stress, anxiety and tension to ease any heartburn issues.

Anaemia

Some women experience iron deficiency during pregnancy since the baby pulls nutrients from her body. Anaemia is a condition when there is low haemoglobin in the blood.

A full body massage can boost your blood circulation which will raise the red blood count and increase the haemoglobin.

Back pain and Sciatica during pregnancy

As the baby grows during pregnancy there are changes in the mother’s body. For example her posture can change which may cause pain in the lower and/or upper back. A massage therapy treatment can help to loosen up the tight muscles and ease her back greatly.

The growth of the baby in the uterus can lead to the compression of the sciatic nerve and women can face sciatic pain down the back of her thigh, lower part of leg and the sole of her foot. As with the tight muscles in her back, massage therapy can help relieve sciatic pain.

A massage therapy treatment also helps release oxytocin and endorphins, which can help relieve the discomfort and pain.

Headaches and migraine

Headaches can be caused by stress, tension on the head, neck and shoulder due to poor posture. Thus a massage is a great way to improve blood circulation and reduce stress.

Stretch marks

While a mother’s bump grows during pregnancy, the skin will stretch causing tightness and stretch marks on the skin. Massage with nourishing oil can help a pregnant woman sooth her skin. (If using an essential oil in this treatment be sure it has been blended for pregnancy by an Aroma Therapist.)

Circulation

A woman’s circulatory system is working with twice effort as it usually does. So leg cramps, swelling in hands and ankles are a common problem in late pregnancy.

Massage therapy can be very helpful in boosting circulation and easing the conditions for lymphatic fluid to move around the body and help in removing the toxins and decrease the swelling on the body.

Prenatal massage is a great way to get relief from aches and body pain. Keep in mind it should be done by a professional massage therapist who is qualified for pregnancy massage.

Massage therapy can be very helpful before delivery and post delivery as it increases the blood circulation in the body and eases the tightness of muscles in the body.

Pregnancy massage is best given on pregnancy massage tables. One of the best is from Gecko Massage Supplies, Click Here for more information.

Basic Foot Reflexology and how to give a proper foot massage?

Basic Foot Reflexology and how to give a proper foot massage?

A perfect Reflexology Foot Massage is the best healing force which can help alleviate many symptoms like insomnia, headache, chronic fatigue, dizziness and it also helps in treating the hidden cause of many internal diseases such as Kidney disease, Heart disease, Liver disease, High blood pressure, plus virtually any other disease known to man.

Foot massage is also one of the most pleasurable experiences that you can have, if the proper reflexology foot massage technique is used by massage therapist. A proper reflexology therapy is one of the best stress relieving treatments and are a great way to end a full body massage.

Some significant fundamentals of Basic Foot Reflexology to keep in mind in order to give a proper foot massage technique are below:

  1. Make sure that your hands are clean and fingernails are appropriately trimmed before giving any type of massage technique.
  2. Feet are usually ticklish and hence great care must be taken in avoiding light touch or brushing lightly on the feet. Being tickled is not relaxing and this makes the nervous system to go in the alert response. So, always make sure to press or hold the feet firmly.
  3. Feet tend to be very sore in some parts. Make sure to apply pressure in a gentle manner and try to avoid digging directly into the tender point. The key to perfect massage is firm pressure in a gentle manner.
  4. Begin the foot massage by massaging every nook and cranny around the ankles. By loosening of all the ligaments and nerves that run through the ankle, the therapist is preparing the remaining of the foot for the direct pressure; this technique is part of any good Shiatsu or Reflexology Foot Massage.

Basics of Foot Reflexology

reflexologyHave a look at massage chart above. The entire human body is represented holographically on the sole of foot. The inside edges of your foot, the most medial or middle aspect, represents the spine. It is because the spine is the middle of the body. That is the reason it is represented by the most middle aspect of feet.

The liver is present on the right side of the chest and abdomen and therefore the area of your feet that treats the liver is the lateral aspect of the right foot.

The spleen is on the left side of the ribs, which is below heart. Therefore it is treated by the outside or the lateral aspect of the left foot.

Head is situated in the toes along with all of the sensory organs. The lower back, urinary bladder sacrum, genitals and lower limbs are positioned towards the heel.

The kidneys are placed in the very centre of the sole of the foot which coincides with the acupuncture point Kidney 1 (Yongquan – ‘Bubbling Spring’).

The anatomical position of Kidney 1 is in between the 2nd and 3rd metatarsals, just posterior to the first phalangeal joint.

Massaging at this point is very advantageous for grounding someone’s energy out of their head, for symptoms such as headaches, insomnia or dizziness.

This point is also the major point where Earth Yin energy enters in the body and EMF (electro-magnetic field) radiation Yang energy is discharged back again in to the ground. This point is also very effective for fertility and longevity.

Aromatherapy and its benefits

Aromatherapy and its benefits

Aromatherapy Massage is a type of Swedish Massage Therapy in which an Essential Oil (a highly concentrated plant oil) is added to the massage oil or lotions used in treatment.

During an Aromatherapy Massage, a person inhales the essential oil molecules or absorbs them through their skin. Essential oils promote helpful changes in your mind and body by inducing the limbic system, a region of the brain known to affect the nervous system.

Why Aromatherapy Massage?
Each and every essential oil used in aromatherapy has different properties and benefits. For example, some essential oils calm and make person feel relaxed while others energize.

Below are the names of some essential oils:

Uplifting: Ylang-Ylang, Clary Sage, Rose, and Neroli Oil
Decongesting: Eucalyptus, Pine, and Tea Tree Oil
Calming: Chamomile, Lavender, and Geranium Oil
Energizing: Rosemary Oil

Aromatherapy Massage techniques are almost same as used during a Swedish massage (the most common type of massage).

Use Essential Oils in a therapeutic massage for below conditions:
Dementia symptoms
Insomnia
Depression
Anxiety
Menstrual pain
Support care for people with conditions such as cancer

Benefits of Aromatherapy Massage
Aromatherapy massage helps in reducing the pain and discomfort of menstrual cramps, as mentioned in a 2015 study from the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Participants of study did a self-massage with rose essential oil, others with unscented almond oil and some with no oil on the first day of menstruation for two menstrual cycles. By the second cycle, Aromatherapy Massage minimized the harshness of pain compared to massage therapy with unscented almond oil or no oil.

Massage with aromatherapy can ease menopausal symptoms. In a study, researchers compared a 30-minute aromatherapy massage (twice a week for four weeks) to a massage which had plain oil or no treatment. They found that both massage and aromatherapy massage were effective in reducing menopausal symptoms but the massage with essential oils was more effective.

What to Expect During Aromatherapy Massage?

A person can find aromatherapy massage at almost every massage clinic or spa, what makes difference is that the style of treatment, degree of customization, and the quality of essential oils varies widely.

Generally, massage therapists have one or more premixed blends of essential oils and will select the blend based on your health concerns. A relaxation massage and stress relief may include lavender essential oil. While for an uplifting massage it may include rosemary essential oil. Your therapist may involve you in the selection process by asking you to smell various blends.

The quality of the essential oils differs widely. Essential oils are different when compared to oils made with synthetic scents which don’t have therapeutic effects. Massage therapists who are highly experienced in aromatherapy tend to use good quality essential oils in their massage treatments.

When the massage therapist begins the massage, you may smell the subtle aroma of essential oil.Once the massage is completed, the therapist may suggest a blend which you can use at home in between massage treatments.

Foot Reflexology Techniques

Foot Reflexology Techniques

Reflexology is a therapy in which pressure is applied on various zones or reflexes on sole and the top of the foot. Each reflex or zone represents a corresponding area of body. By stimulating the reflex the corresponding organ of the body is stimulated through reflexology.

Therapists claim that the reflexology therapy can help someone get relief from tension, improve their blood circulation and lymph circulation, and promotion of healing by activating the immune responses of the body. It can also help to reduces stress, soothe inflammation and improve existing chronic ailments.

There are different types of reflexology techniques

Vertical Reflex Therapy
The Vertical Reflex Therapy was founded by Lynne Booth. She is a graduate of IIR in the UK. Lynne’s method includes the patient standing and the therapist treating the dorsal (Upper) part of the foot.

This technique worked better than traditional reflexology because a weight-bearing foot is more sensitized then the relaxed foot.

Gentle Touch Method
Sue Ricks developed Gentle Touch Reflexology in the UK. Based on conventional reflexology but done with a lighter touch. Therefore in this there is no manual stimulating of the reflexes with pressure.

With the Gentle Touch Method the feet are worked alternately and not consecutively, so the body remains in balance.

Hot Stone Method
In this technique warm basalt pebbles are utilized in combination with reflexology techniques. The warm stones are also positioned on the body at various points to ‘open the energy pathways.’

Practitioners say that the warmth from the stones helps with relaxation. Sometimes the stones are also used cold to promote healing.

Precision Method
The base of Precision Reflexology is an Oriental philosophy. It states that a man is part of the web of nature and that the human body reflects that web.

The reflexes are considered as connected with each other. A significant part of precision reflexology is done by balancing the body systems through touching more than one reflex at a time.

Ayurvedic Reflexology
Ayurvedic Reflexology is a combo of conventional reflexology; Ayurveda techniques (it is a traditional healing system from India, where the movement of hand follows the direction of pranic energy), and the application of essential oils chosen as per the needs of the patient. Often a warmed, brass bowl is gently applied to the feet. This treatment was developed by, Sharon Stathis, in Brisbane, Australia.

Rwo Shur Reflexology
A Catholic priest Father Josef was a missionary working in Taiwan. He was severely suffering from rheumatoid arthritis in his knees. A colleague of his suggested reflexology.

At that time there were no reflexology practitioners in Taiwan, so Father Josef researched reflexology through books and applied the techniques himself. He used to do a deep stimulation technique functional with his knuckles. It was extremely painful. However, after 2 weeks the arthritis was gone. He shared his new-found knowledge with the people of Taiwan.

Unfortunately, his successful practice and school was closed by the government of Taiwan. Eventually Father Josef was authorized to carry on his work in a restricted hospital setting.

Metamorphic Technique
The Metamorphic Technique is based on the spine reflex that runs along the hands, feet and head. It’s a calming method and patients are encouraged to sleep at the time of treatment. Therapists claim that it is a good option for unsettled babies and young children. In this technique pressure is not used; instead, a light touch is applied.

Common Massage Therapy Techniques

Common Massage Therapy Techniques

An expert massage therapist will have a lot of techniques and tools to make your treatment time an enjoyable, reviving one.  Below are some of the basic techniques used by professional massage therapists.

Kneading

There are different ways in which kneading can be performed, for example thumb kneading and palm kneading are popular ones.

The purpose of the massage determines the amount of pressure applied on the body part with perfect rhythm and the rate of movement.

Longitudinal Gliding

It’s the most basic and effective massage techniques used by the therapists.  This technique is in sync with the blood flow.  It helps the fluid to travel from the injured body part and thus helps reduce inflammation and swelling.

Trigger Point Therapy

This is a bodywork technique that involves applying pressure to calm the tissues to relieve your client from pain.

Trigger points are the points of muscles which cross over with acupuncture points.  Therapists work on these points to ease the strain on their clients muscles.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is a technique for stretching the fascia to balance the body.  Fascia is located between the skin and the underlying structure of muscle and bones.

It is a web of connective tissues which connects muscles, organs and skeletal structure of the body. Fascia can be affected due to injuries, stress, trauma and bad body posture.

Compression Massage

Rhythmic compression is used to make deep hyperaemia and softening effect in the tissue.  It is generally a warm-up session for a deeper & more specific massage work.  In sports massage this technique is mostly used during therapy.

Deep Transverse Frictions

Transverse Frictions is a therapy done by fingers by working on tissues.  It involves oscillating pressure applied across the direction of the tissue fibres.

Transverse friction technique is used in case of tendon or ligament injury to break down pain producing scar tissue.

Cross-Fibre Massage

Cross fibre technique is used for creating stretching and broadening effect on muscle groups or on a specific point where muscles are connected to the tissues.

This technique is used to apply frictional force to reduce adhesion and help create a reviving, strong repairing effect during healing process.

Swedish massage

Swedish technique includes a combination of techniques like long strokes, friction, kneading, percussion, vibrations, shaking motions and effleurage

The basic techniques of techniques is as follows –

  1. Effleurage: Involves gliding strokes with the palms, thumbs and fingertips
  2. Petrissage: Includes kneading movements
  3. Friction: Involves circular pressures with the palms with hand
  4. Vibration: Involves  oscillatory movements which shake or vibrate the body
  5. Percussion: Includes brisk hacking or tapping
  6. Passive and active movements: Involves bending and stretching

Hot stone massage

Therapists use heated, warm stones on the body on specific points.  This warmth helps the muscles loosen up so the massage therapist can reach the areas with muscle tension quickly.

PNF Stretches (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation)

This technique is a combination of passive stretching and isometrics in which your muscle is alternating stretched passively and contracted.  It mainly targets the nerve receptors in muscle to extend the muscle length.

Handy Uses for Essential Oils!

Essential Oils have an excess of amazing uses for everything from pampering yourself to cleaning and helping with various ailments.

What are Essential Oils? An Essential Oil is an aromatic liquid extracted from leaves, twigs, berries, bark, wood, root, flowers, citrus peels, or other plant matter. They are not actually oily, but have more of a water-like feel. Though Essential Oils are natural, they are very concentrated and should be used with caution. Except for Lavender, tea tree, German chamomile, rose, sandalwood and geranium, most Essential Oils should not be used undiluted or neat directly on the skin.

Essential Oil

Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil like sweet almond, jojoba, sesame, grapeseed etc unless you know it is safe to use undiluted. To test if you are sensitive to particular oil, combine 1 or 2 drops to a teaspoon of carrier oil in a small container. Dab a small amount to your wrist or the crook of your arm and wait for 24 hours. Use extra caution if you have a serious health condition or are pregnant. Educate yourself about the properties and contraindication of essential oil before using it. Now that we have that out of the way, on to the uses!

Cleaner: 2 teaspoons of antimicrobial tea tree oil with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle

Laundry: Mix 3-5 drops of your favorite essential oil with an unscented laundry detergent before each load.

Air Freshener: Combine 1 teaspoon of essential oil to 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray as needed. Before using on fabrics, do a spot check to make sure it doesn’t stain.

Repel Mice: For a natural repellant, add 2 teaspoons of peppermint to 1 cup of water and spray in areas where you think mice might frequent.

For Bath: Add 5-8 drops of peppermint or rosemary oil to a large, hot foot bath to relieve pain and stimulate circulation.

Massage: Use light carrier oil like vegetable, sunflower, or walnut as a base for massage oil. Add a few drops of peppermint for sore muscles, ginger for your lower back and joints, or avocado oil for a luxurious foot bath.

Hair Loss: Add a few drops of rosemary essential oil to dollop of shampoo or conditioner to increase circulation to the scalp.

Headaches: Mix a small amount of peppermint oil to carrier oil, apply to fingertips and massage temples. If peppermint is too strong, add lavender for extra calming properties.

Burns: Apply lavender essential oil to burns to relieve pain and stop the burn from progressing. Do a spot check first to make sure you don’t have sensitivity. To soothe sunburns, add a few drops of lavender oil to a cool bath.

Massage Is More Than Pampering Yourself!

Massage Is More Than Pampering Yourself!

People believe that getting a massage is just a way to pamper or indulge yourself. Because of this many of us wait to have one; we all treat it as a way to reward ourselves for special occasion. Benefits of receiving a therapeutic massage run much deeper than the superficial “feeling good”-which seems like a good enough reason.

Endless positive reasons are there to receive a massage, but here we will discuss few:

Alleviate Chronic Pain

Many people suffer with chronic back, shoulder and/or neck issues. Massage will help to reduce the cause of this pain. Massage will be a healthier and more holistic approach than reaching for synthetic drugs.

Better Sleep

Many people have problems falling asleep. Whenever you get a massage, it not only reduces tension & stress but it will help to change our hormone levels in such a way that allows for more profound relaxation to arise. Therapeutic massage has been linked to increased delta waves in the brain, which are connected to deeper, more restful sleep.

Relieve Mild Depression

Massage Therapy will help you release tension, stress and anxiety that is often accompanied with mild depression. Receiving physical touch can change our bio- chemistry and lower our cortisol levels, your body’s stress hormone. High cortisol levels can lead to all kinds of imbalance in our systems. Massage therapy is a natural way to regulate these hormones levels, improve state in our overall mental and physical wellbeing.

Boost Your Immunity

When you are stressed and anxious all time, it’s harder for our body to fight off and defend against the pathogens we’re exposed to every single day. Massage can allow  lymphatic system to drain and release waste like bacteria from the body more efficiently and increase our chances to fight off the germs we come in contact with.

Self Massage
